The book of the Russian writer, poet, historian and philosopher Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1865–1941) is devoted to the life of the Holy Paul and St. Augustine (354–430) This book is the first in the trilogy of the “faces of the saints from Jesus to us” (“Pavel. Augustine”, “Francis of Assiz”, “Jeanne d"Arc”) and belongs to the last years of Merezhkovsky’s work when he turned to the genre of fictionalized biographies, combining A Christian historical romance with a religious and philosophical essay. The central idea that permeates the entire trilogy is the salvation of mankind through an appeal to the foundations of the Christian faith. It seemed that Europe was experiencing agony: the victory of totalitarianism, the triumph of atheism and the thunderstorms of the new World War ... At this terrible time, Merezhkovsky addresses the main figures of the Christian West: the apostle Paul, theologian Augustine, preacher Francis and girl-warrior Jeanne d’Arc. Describing the offensive of evil, Merezhkovsky believes in the final victory of light and reason:
