The texts of this book represent the reader an extensive epistolary dialogue of two remarkable figures of the era of the late XIX - the beginning of the twentieth century: Sergey Alexandrovich Rachinsky and Stepan Vasilyevich Smolensky. If the activities of S. V. Smolensky - the largest scientist -musician, director of the Synodal School of Church Singing and the court singing chapel - are covered in sufficient detail in a number of publications of recent years (mainly in the series "Russian spiritual music in documents and materials"), then S."s activities of S. A. Rachinsky, a scientist-biologist, an outstanding teacher, the creator of a whole network of folk schools, still does not enjoy well-known fame. It is necessary to reprint his heritage and, first of all, his interesting and grandiose correspondence.
The list of names of Rachinsky correspondents who wrote from all over Russia on a variety of public, pedagogical and private issues is very impressive: from ministers and other influential state -owned persons to ordinary peasants. Rachinsky carefully preserved all this correspondence, calling it his "wagon to the offspring." The messages of Rachinsky and Smolensky were equally reverent.
A very wide range of problems is addressed in the published correspondence. First of all, these are, of course, the issues of Russian church singing, its history, its current state, its further paths, methods of teaching singing both in a peasant school and in such a highly professional educational institution as a synodal school. Correspondents of the actual pedagogical practice in its various aspects pay a lot of attention. But still, probably, the main thing in these letters is the very life of Russia of that era in all the wealth of its manifestations.
In addition, the texts of Rachinsky and Smolensky are magnificent in the literary sense and, using the words of V.V. Rozanov about the letters of Rachinsky, are the classic style of Russian literature, the full of "taste, grace and depths".
