Syrian Christianity between Byzantium and Iran

The monograph for the first time comprehensively examines the urgent problem lying at the junction of a number of scientific disciplines (Byzantinistics, Iranistics, the history of the Church) - the confessional separation of Syrian Christianity during the period of intense Christological disputes (IV -VII centuries), during which the foundations of church doctrine were laid down . The author studied this problem on the example of the confessional isolation of the Church of the East, which existed on the territory of the Sasanid Iran, from Christianity, officially recognized in the Byzantine Empire. Based on a comparative analysis of Syrian, Greek and Latin sources, the question of the relationship of the Vizantial Nestorianism and the traditions of the Church of the East and the reasons for the isolation of the latter from imperial Christianity were analyzed in detail. Particular attention is paid to the influence on this process of difficult relations between Byzantium and the power of the Sassanids, as well as the internal religious policy of Iranian shahs and Byzantine emperors
