Roman I.S. Shmeleva "Summer of the Lord" is the most famous work of the author. In the full version, it was published in Paris in 1948. It consists of three parts: "holidays", "holidays - joy", "sorrows".
In the novel "Summer of the Lord" extremely fully and deeply recreated the church-religious layer of folk life. The meaning and beauty of the Orthodox holidays, rites, customs remaining unchanged from century to century is disclosed so brightly and talented that the novel has become the true encyclopedia of the life of Russian Orthodox man. Shmelev’s language is organically connected with all the wealth and variety of living folk speech, the very soul of Russia reflected in it. I.A. Ilyin noted that the Shmelev depicted in the novel is not what “it was and passed”, but that “is and will be ... this is the spiritual fabric of the believer of Russia. This is the spirit of our people. Shmelev created a "artistic work of national and metaphysical significance", capturing the "Sources of our national spiritual power" (Ilyin I.A.
