A separate publication “Summer of the Lord”, which amounted to three parts: “Holidays”, “Joy”, “Sorrow”, was published in Paris in 1948 and was recognized as the peak of the writer"s work. In the novel, a lively and vivid picture of the patriarchal Moscow life is recreated through the eyes of a little boy, cleansed of accidents, a beautiful and bright image of the Motherland, spiritualized by the highest meaning and faith. “I show the face of Holy Russia, which I wear in my heart ...” wrote Shmelev. “Russia, which looked into my children"s soul.”
