The Holy Optina elders are a galaxy of Orthodox ascetics and confessors who shone in the 19th century in the monastery Vvedensky Optina of Deserts, near the city of Kozelsk, Kaluga province. From generation to generation, the experience of prayer, repentance and spiritual reasoning passed from the teacher to the student to the student. Thousands of ordinary people, the nobility and the intelligentsia flocked in Optina for spiritual nourishing. It is impossible to overestimate the contribution of the Optina elders to the revival of the spiritual meaning of Orthodoxy in Russia and their influence on Russian culture is impossible.
