The following of the holy saving passions of our Lord Jesus Christ, committed on the morning of the great heel, or "twelve gospels", as he is popularly called. - One of the most important and touching worships of the passionate week.
The origins of this service are very ancient: back in the first centuries of Christianity, the gospel read all night in those places where the relevant Gospel events took place: on Eleonian grief, in Gepsimania, on Calvary. At night, moving from one memorable place to another, illuminating the rocky path by lamps, the believers in the footsteps of the Lord with chants walked.
Again and again listening to the words of the Gospel, we are present with a farewell conversation between Jesus Christ with his disciples in the secret evening, his tradition to Judah, the trial of Him among the high priests and Pilate, his crucifixion and partly burial. Reading excerpts from the gospel is interspersed by the singing of touching antiphons, and then the canon and stichera.
