The monograph by the Doctor of Historical Sciences K. A. Averyanov is devoted to the life of St. Sergius of Radonezh - one of the most noticeable figures of domestic medieval history. Perhaps as much has been written about any of the Russian saints as the founder of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. Nevertheless, at the first acquaintance with this literature, a strange and amazing picture is found: at first glance about the life of Sergius of Radonezh, we know almost everything - and at the same time almost nothing, even accurate dates of life. The XIV century in the history of Russia is extremely complicated for the historian primarily because of the extreme poverty of sources. The scattered fragments of the early chronicles of the later chronicle vaults, a certain number of acts, several literary monuments - that, in essence, is all that the researcher of this time has. At the same time, there is a whole layer of sources that awaits his researcher. We are talking about the lives of ancient Russian saints. The main difficulty is to be able to see the features of the real historical reality of that time, to see specific historical facts. Thanks to a thorough analysis and comparison of various sources, the author first managed to recreate the complete biography of the most famous Russian saint
