The third volume series of publications of sources “Russians about Serbia and Serbs” included essays and articles about Serbia of the 1860s-1880s. Russian scientist-ethnographer, Slavist, journalist and teacher Pavel Apollonovich Rovinsky (1831–1916) The initiator of the project and the compiler of Tom is the famous Russian serbist historian Andrei Leonidovich Shemyakin (1960–2018), believed that if P. A. Rovinsky about Serbia, which were taken separately, are only local illustration, then his works on Serbia, considered in the Serbia, considered in The complex “acquire the character of a representative source, the analysis of which makes it possible for wide generalizations, voluminous demonstrating the slice of life, behavior and representations of the Serbs at the initial stage of the modernization of their country (late 1860s).” Since the mental characteristics of the Serbs, noticed by P. A. Rovinsky a century and a half ago, were also manifested at the turn of the XX - XXI centuries, its observations are also relevant for the rational understanding of the nature of the Yugoslav conflict, its causes and inevitability.
