The series "Words of the Holy Fathers" is prepared for those who are interested in issues of spiritual life. The experience of ancient ascetics, relevant for a person living in the modern world, was chosen from the rich patristic heritage. Rev. John Kassian Roman was born (about 350) in Marseille, in the Gallic region, in the Western Roman Empire. From here, probably, the name of his "Roman" came from. John had noble, rich parents, and he was able to get a good education. It is believed that the childhood years of his life took place on the Black Sea, on the territory of modern Romania. From a young age, John was loved by a godly life and, having a desire to achieve perfection in it, went to Palestine, to the Bethlehem monastery, where he accepted the monastic tonsure
