In the book of the Russian philosopher and historian of the religions of Alexei Ivanovich Vvedensky, the “religious consciousness of paganism” is given a systematic analysis of the initial stages of the development of religious consciousness. According to the author, the criterion in the assessment of any beliefs is the “truth of the being of God”, in a diverse relationship with which religious consciousness enters. Vvedensky believed that for the pagan (“natural”) consciousness, the being of God was opened only partially, criticized the features and disadvantages of “false religious life”, understanding it as “the world"s world of faith”. In this work, ideas regarding religious consciousness developed by the teacher Vvedensky V.D. Kudryavtsev-Platonov in the cycle From readings on the philosophy of religion. The universal idea of religious development proposed by Kudryavtsev-Platonov appeared in Vvedensky in the concept of a “natural” religious consciousness, directed to the search for positive religious truth, but gradually coming to complete degradation.
