For many centuries, people used the word religion in the meanings unusual for us. So, in ancient Rome, a man who did not dare to do some kind of act in any way could say: Oh, this religion is. And about the pious priest in medieval Western Europe they could say that he is not religious, bearing in mind that he does not belong to any monastic order. The usual idea for us that there are many religions in the world, most people of the past would seem very strange. How was the modern concept of religion formed? How universal and consistent is it?
