The book of the Lebanese professor Nada Hlau is dedicated to the visual arts and architecture of Syria and Lebanon of the 4-7 centuries. The territories of these countries were once part of the Roman Empire, and after its division into East and West under the emperor Feodosia I in 395 became part of Byzantium. These lands were one of the centers of the origin of Christian culture. Under the influence of local theological ideas, new iconographic schemes arose there, the influence of the style of Syrian and Palestinian art is noticeable in the early Christian era, even in some works of the metropolitan Byzantine architecture and painting. The oldest of the monuments that have reached us with murals on the Old Testament and New Testament topics - the synagogue and the Baptisteria in the fool Europos on the Euphrates, the heyday of this Syrian city fell on the II -III century.
Some of the monuments in Syria considered in the book died during the war that began in 2011, nothing others are known about the fate of many others. In addition to the educational goal, which is set by the author of almost any popular science publication, N. Helu sees his task to attract readers" attention to that part of the world cultural heritage, which at any moment can be irrevocably lost.
The book is addressed to students studying in the specialty "art history" and is designed to supplement the knowledge received by the history of Byzantine art, as well as a wide circle of readers interested in Christian culture
