The sage of Patanjali approved Yoga as a discipline of eight practices, or Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga consists of three main groups. The first two practices are the pit and Niyama. Together they create a moral basis for the behavior of the practitioner. Pits (restrictions) and niyama (vows) develop ethical behavior to achieve spiritual goals. The second group consists of external practices that include asanas, pranayama and pratyahara. This group is known as Hatha Yoga. These practices are concentrated mainly in physical disciplines. They strengthen the body, enhance vitality and soothe the mind. The third group is known as Raja Yoga, which consists of internal practices of Dharan, Dhyana and Samadhi. The practice of Raja Yoga is the practice of mental concentration, which is necessary to achieve the state of superconscious, or samadhi. Those who intend to follow the path of spiritual enlightenment must first cleanse the body, mind and heart, the habitat of the spirit
