The outstanding philologist and theorist of literature Erich Auerbach (1892-1957), after several years of teaching in Marburg, emigrated to Istanbul, where he created his famous work of the Mimesis, and after the war he worked at US universities. In this edition, reflecting different stages of his creative activity, the essays are collected (including two chapters from Mimesis), covering the panorama of world literature from Homer and Bible to modernist authors of the 20th century. Most texts are published in Russian for the first time. Also, for the first time, the elected letters of Auerbach, preceded by the preface of the compiler, are presented in Russian.
The book is intended for literary scholars, philosophers, historians of civilization, as well as for the widest reader audience interested in the problems of world culture and the intellectual history of the past century
