The Muslims, which was originally created in order to control the religious life of Muslims, eventually became the most important tool for maintaining national identity for various ethnic groups of the Tatars. In modern Russia, numerous mufti are bureaucratic structures focused on the growth of their symbolic and material capital in the process of interaction with state authorities and religious associations. The book of Renata Beckin is an attempt to explore the mufti and their relationship with the state using the theory of religion. The focus of the scientist is formal and informal rules on which this institution, its history and current position are based. In the study of the Tatar spiritual departments of Muslims in the European part of Russia, the author relies on scientific literature, written texts and oral performances of Muslim religious and public figures, archival sources, as well as interviews with acting and former mufti and other religious bureaucrats made by the author in 2017–2022 .
