Preferring these lines by the book of the bishop of the Vienna and Austrian Hilarion “Orthodoxy”, I would like to, first of all, note the timeliness of its appearance. The need for such a comprehensive study of the history, teachings and worship of the Orthodox Church has long been rushed. I am convinced that the publication of the first volume of this book will cause a lively interest among the domestic and foreign reader.
The author of the book is familiar with the wealth of the theological and liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church. Having received a versatile education, Bishop Ilarion became the author of numerous monographs and articles on theological and church-historical topics, translations from ancient languages, spiritual and musical works. The long-term ministry of the mother Church, the rich experience of creative activity and a wide horizons allow him to present the tradition of the Orthodox Church in all its diversity.
The second, “liturgical” of the book that the reader holds in his hands opens with a section on the Orthodox Church - its architectural characteristics, theological significance, and interior decoration. This section speaks of various objects of church utensils and the liturgical vestments of the clergy. Here we are talking about the temple painting, about the icon and its theological meaning.
In the following, central section of this volume, we are talking about the main features of the Orthodox worship, about the Divine Liturgy and other worship of the daily circle, about the seven -sided circle of worship, about the formation of a annual circle of church holidays and about the theological and spiritual significance of each of the great holidays.
