Vasily Osipovich Klyuchevsky (1841–1911)-a Russian historian, professor of Moscow University and a secret adviser-through the study of ancient Russian lives of saints, examined the issue of the participation of monasteries in the colonization of North-Eastern Russia. He considered the lives of saints as historical sources and gave historical interpretation the events described in them.
