The Trrant Cathedral, which was the determining event of the spiritual life of Europe of the 16th century, deepened the ideological confrontation, contributing to the consolidation of not only the Catholic, but also the Protestant camp. In the second half of the century, it was church historiography that became one of the most massive genres of historical literature. The largest work of this period is prepared by a group of historians-Lutheran under the leadership of M. Flaius “Church History”, which soon received a different name-“Magdeburg Century”. This essay became unique in historiography of the 16th century. a collective research, the first documented and scientifically developed reconstruction of centuries -old Christian history. The emergence of such an authoritative work of scientists-Protestants prompted the best minds of the Catholic camp, primarily Cardinal Caesar Baronia, to contrast the no less funded composition-“Church Annals”. As a result, church historiography of the XVI century. Not only responded to ideological challenges of time, but also intensively developed in the line of active interfaith polemic.
