On January 22, 2006, in the Patriarchal Chambers of the Moscow Kremlin, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church in the person of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus" Alexy II the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Ustyuzhenskaya-Smolensk, the late XV-early XVI centuries. The icon was abducted from the Ustyuzhensky Museum of Local Lore (Inv. No. 1162) in 1994. At the time of the abduction, she was in the iconostasis of the Virgin of the Rogestanian Cathedral of Ustyuzhny (Vologda Oblast) In 2005, Antikvar Richard Temple discovered the Ustyuzhenskaya shrine and, at the request of the Russian service for the protection of cultural values, returned it to Russia free of charge. Currently, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Ustyuzhenskaya-Smolenskaya is located in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior at the main iconostasis in a special kyota and enjoys all-Russian veneration
