The Metropolitan of the East American and New York Lavr (Schkurla, 1928-2008) is the primary hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad. He played an important role in the modern history of the Russian Church. On May 17, 2007, together with the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Alexy II, Metropolitan Lavr signed an act of canonical communication, crowning the healing of an almost ninety -year separation in the Russian Orthodox Church. Without Metropolitan Lavra, the unification of the foreign church with the Moscow Patriarchate, perhaps, would not have taken place to this day.
