"Ladder" is the treasure of Orthodox ascetic literature. It was created in the VI century by the Monk John Climacus, hegumen of the Sinai Monastery. It consists of 30 chapters - the steps along which a Christian should go back to God. In every chapter St. John tells of the laws of spiritual life, the causes and consequences of sins and passions, about how to fight them and how to acquire virtues. To this day, the "ladder" is recognized as the most important leadership for spiritual life not only for monks, but also for all laity.
