The book about one of the most influential and contradictory rulers in the history of the Jewish people is the king of Herod I Great (73 - 4 BC), whose name is familiar to most readers primarily from the gospel narrative about the beating of babies. Over the years of his reign, Herod I expanded the possessions of the Jewish kingdom, leaving behind unique samples of art and masterpieces of architecture, including the updated Jerusalem Temple. However, the reputation of a merciless tyrant, a monster who executed even his own sons, is still firmly preserved behind him.
