The island of Valaam and the oldest Russian Valaam Monastery, located on it, in the period between the two world wars found themselves in the territory subordinate to Finland. At a time when terrible persecution, brethren, not without obstacles were brought down to the church in the USSR, but had the opportunity to pray and engage in spiritual education. In 1936, the works of Abbot Khariton (Dunaeva) (1872-1947), the governor of the monastery, published a book “Collection of the prayer of Jesus”, which reminded thousands of Russian emigrants scattered all over the world, the ancient experience of the constant Orthodox prayer. This doctrine of prayer, which was summed up by monks, became so popular that two years later the brethren of the monastery published an expanded version, a real textbook of Jesus prayer, designed in the form of dialogues between the old man-monk and his student, a priest.
