The book is dedicated to the icon and temple iconography in Byzantium and in Russia. It is based on the original studies of the author published over the past 20 years. Some articles were significantly processed and supplemented for this publication. The methodology is based on interpretative iconography and hierotopia, and in this sense the book is associated with the first edition of this series (A. M. Lidov. Hierotopia. Spatial icons and images-paradigms in the Byzantine culture. M., 2009) The book consists of four large sections: "icon and iconic", "heavenly Jerusalem", "Temple iconography and Byzantine theology", "The origin of the iconostasis". The sections combine 12 chapters focusing on new plots, interpretations and generalizing ideas that were proposed by the author in the process of specific research. The book, without claiming a complete or brief history of the icon, reflects a new understanding of the most important phenomenon, the meaning of which far goes beyond the limits of traditional art history.
