Violence is often called the “dark wrong side” of religion - and indeed, it invariably accompanies all the religious traditions of the world, starting from the era of archaic sacrifices and ending with jihadism of the 21st century. But why, if all religions speak of love, peace and universal harmony, do they wage endless wars? With this issue, Mark Jurgensmayer went to radical Christians in the United States and Northern Ireland, Jewish Zelots, the Sepupad architects in Palestine and refugees from the Middle East, to the Sikh activists in India and the Buddhist - in Myanmar and Japan. The result was this book - the most authoritative study on religious terror and the connection between religion and violence in general. The key to this connection, as the author claims, is a "cosmic war", which implies both the eternal confrontation between light and darkness, and the war of the Holy World, which believers all world religions lead against those whom they consider enemies.
