Pyotr Semenovich Smirnov (1861-no earlier than 1933)-Russian historian and theologian, professor of the Theological Academy in St. Petersburg and the author of a large number of articles of the Orthodox Theological Encyclopedia.
In the history of the Russian split of the Old Believers, who was highly appreciated by the contemporaries of Professor Smirnov, the origins of the split that happened in the second half of the XVII century are explored.
The author considers church reform carried out by Patriarch Nikon during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich. Her goal was the unification of the liturgical rank of the Russian Church with the Greek Church, primarily with the Church of Constantinople. Following the determination of the phenomenon of the split, Peter Semenovich emphasizes the most important points in the history of the split, at the same time demonstrating the attitude of the church and the government to this issue
