Viktor German (1915-1985), the author of this book, calls three hundred Americans (including himself), who arrived in the early 1930s in the USSR to build a Gorky automobile plant and could not return to their homeland: mass political political Repressions, the second world, and then the Cold War deprived most of them the opportunity to see the house again. Their destinies developed tragically: some died in prisons, others disappeared in the camps, and others lived their age in a dilapidating near -Zavodsky village.
Viktor German himself lived in the Soviet Union for forty-five years, of which he spent eighteen years in forced labor camps and a Siberian exile. After his liberation, the Soviet authorities did not recognize the American citizenship of Herman and did not allow him to leave the country, but in 1976, Victor still managed to return to the United States. In his homeland, several books came out of his pen, including "Gray People" - a collection of memoir testimonies of the unlucky life of "Russian Americans" in the Soviet Union.
