“Kindness” (“Filokalia”, in Greek) is one of the most famous collections of patristic texts in the Orthodox tradition. Initially, he was compiled by St. Macarius of Corinthian and edited by the Monk Nicodemus Svyatogorz at the end of the 18th century. The task of the compilers was to introduce contemporaries to the half -forgotten ways of asceticism and the mystical experience of the great ancient ascetics and teachers of monastic work.
The publication of the Slavic kindness was based on the corps of translations into Church Slavonic, made by the founder of the Russian old age, St. Paisius (Velichkovsky) also at the end of the XVIII century. Proceedings on collecting patristic texts were conducted by the prep. Paisius is purposefully: even before the publication of Greek “kindness”, almost all the creations included in him were already translated into Church Slavonic. Particular care of the works of Prep. Paisiya had St. Filaret of Moscow: thanks to his support, several publications of Slavic “kindness” were committed, the first of which saw the light in 1793
