Gabriel Vasilievich Gerakov (1775-1838), writer, teacher and translator, cavalier of many orders. He taught history in the first Cadet Corps and gave private lessons in the families of aristocrats, then served in the Ministry of Finance. In 1820, he went on a trip from St. Petersburg to Tiflis, which passed through the cities of the Volga region (Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Astrakhan, etc) and the south of Russia (Crimea, Kuban, Caucasus) He outlined his observations in the “travel notes” published in 1828. The traveler notes the condition of roads, monasteries and temples, hospitals and orphan houses, draws attention to the prosperity of peasants, gives data on the population, talks about interesting theatrical productions, and mentions a meeting with A. S. Pushkin.
