The public organization "Historical Club" of Sevastopol Tauride "together with the Holy Georgian Monastery, this reprint edition is continued by the series Ancient Guide as part of the publishing project The Christian Heritage of Tauris".
The Holy Georgian Monastery is one of the oldest in Crimea. It was founded in 891 by Greek sailors who endured a shipwreck off the coast of Cape Fiolent. The first documentary evidence of the monastery dates back to the 16th century. In ancient documents, the monastery was officially called as the Balaklava St. George Monastery. An important mission was originally entrusted to it - the preparation of the Hieromonks for the Black Sea Fleet created at that time. The hieromonks carried obedience on ships, in the garrisons of Crimea and the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea, participated in the heroic defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War (1853-1856)
Cape Fiolent, on the slope of which the monastery is located, is a beautiful place in Crimea, with the traces of an ancient volcano, pristine nature and unique sea landscape.
Amazing natural beauty and rich history attracted travelers and pilgrims to the monastery. The monastery was repeatedly visited by Russian emperors from the reigning house of the Romanovs, famous poets and writers.
