This book contains the essay of Mikhail Epstein, written in recent years and united by the theme of higher values: life, mind, health, humanity, kindness, giftedness, hope. Nowadays, they are subjected to severe trials. Disasters, wars, epidemics, dictatorships, invasions of ideological viruses - irrationalism, aggression, fascism, extreme left and right ideologies. But values are only as much as they are in doubt. This book is not about the preservation, but about the increase and deepening of values, about the new meanings with which historical anxieties fill our lives. The temporary range of this book: from the biblical understanding of sorrow, sin, severe trials, as it was expressed in the books of Job and Ekklesiast, - to the pandemic as a global crisis, challenging traditional ideas about morality, psychology, about the very nature of man.
