"Devi -Mahatmea" (letters. "Great of the goddess") is a work that is the first in authority among the Shaktas, admirers of the great goddess of Hinduism, and located among the most famous works in Sanskrit. "Devi-Mahatmea" is part of the Markandei Purana, but, in fact, is an independent text.
The popularity of Mahatma is the fact that so far in India in holy places associated with the cult of the goddess, her poems are recited every day. The meaning of the work lies in the fact that the concept of a single great goddess first appears here, in relation to which all other female deities and in general female creatures are its private manifestations. The plot of the work combines three main myths about the phenomena and exploits of the goddess: about the battle with the asuras of Madhu and Kaitabha, about the battle with the Asura-Buywol of the Mahisha and the war between the goddess and the asuras-brothers of the Shumbha and Nishumbha.
