The book reveals the history of the creation and ideological foundations of one of the most important journalistic monuments of the XVII century. - “Development with the Greeks about faith”, written by a scientist, diplomat, builder of the Epiphany monastery Arseny Sukhanov in the summer of 1650
The reader will get acquainted for the first time with all the author’s editions of the famous essay, created before Nikon’s reforms and anticipated the attempt of reformers on the representations of Russian people about the uniqueness of their state and the piety of their faith, the attempt, which gave rise to the split of the Russian Church. The book analyzes in detail discussions about this work in Russian journalism and historical science of the XVII-XIX centuries. And most importantly, the ideological context was considered in which Sukhanov gave the answer to the question whether the Russian state has its own spiritual basis, or it is a product of the influence of cultures of other countries. The determination with which Arseny rejected the claims of the Greeks to be “teachers of faith” for the Russians reflected the real beliefs of the Russian people of his time. The formation of these beliefs is traced by the author from the first Russian written monuments of the XI century. to Peter I.
The reader will see that the ideology of a single Russia and the great Russian power was formed by Russian scribes, ahead of the state recognition of these ideas and despite the circumstances of real politics.
Nikon’s reforms and the king’s appeal to Greek authority, when the patriarch is overthrown, did not have any influence on the development of ideas about the original independent and sacred Russian kingdom in society, which Sukhanov defended. After the death of the academic idea, formulated by him on the basis of the centuries -old development of Russian thought, were approved at the highest state level by the enlightened king Fedor Alekseevich.
