The book contains conversations given by the entitled old man Ephraim at the Holy Mount Athos in the monastery of Philofei, where he was an abbot. Conversations affect the main aspects of monastic life: obedience, humility, love, prayer, the struggle with passions and mortal memory. The old man considered the work of Jesus prayer the main condition for acquiring impassivity and union with Christ in this life and eternity. For clarity, the elder often gives examples from his own life and the life of the Monk Joseph Isihast, his old man, under whose leadership he worked for the first twelve years on Athos. The main part of the conversations-15 of 24-was translated from the Greek language by the brotherly of the monastery of the Monk Anthony the Great. Seven conversations-6, 10, 15, 18.19, 20 and 22-were translated by Abbot Dionysius (Shelenov), professor of the Department of Philology MDA, and two conversations-the 3rd and 24th-hieromonk Feodor (Yulaev), teacher MDA. The brethren of the Antoniev Monastery, the publishing house of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, as well as Sergey Ilyin, participated in the editing of the Russian translation. The notes at the end of the book are indicated in the text with numbers taken into square brackets
