In the main text of the ninth volume, the story “Eternal Husband” (1869–1870) is published, as well as plans and sketches of unrealized works, conceived during the years of work on “Idiot” or after its completion, but until the final design of the “demons” (from 1868 to 1870) The most important in its ideological and artistic meaning from these unrealized ideas is the plan of the epic of the Life of the Great Sinful ”(1869–1870), with many story motifs of which the author subsequently took advantage of his last novels:“ Demons ”(1870–1872),“ Teenager ” (1874–1875) and the “Brothers Karamazovs” (1878–1880) From the number of sketches that precede work on “demons”, the exception was made for records of the story of Captain Kartuzov (1869–1870), due to their close connection with the text of “demons”, where the plot of the story about Kartuzov entered as one of the private episodes (line Captain Lebyadkin - Lisa Tushina), the editors considered it appropriate for the materials for the story about Kartuzov to transfer to the eleventh volumes of this publication, where they open the publication of preparatory sketches and draft materials for the demons.
The section “Manuscript materials” included draft sketches to the novel “Idiot” and to “Eternal Husband”, as well as plans and sketches of unrealized ideas (1868–1870) The section Options includes options for the lifetime editions of Idiot and Eternal husband. In the “Notes” section, comments on the “Idiot” and the manuscripts of the novel, to the “Eternal Husband” and the sketches and plans placed in this volume are printed.
