The encyclopedic reference book includes detailed information about the communities of mercy sisters that existed in the Russian Empire in the middle of the XIX - early twentieth century, and is the first description of the history of the average medical personnel of that time. The reference book is preceded by historiographic and source -performance reviews, as well as a historical outline, which discusses the issues of the emergence and phased development of communities, analyzed the structure of their management and the principles of financial support, various aspects of service. Separately represented the activities of communities in peacetime and during periods of military operations, information about their closure and the fate of the sisters after the revolutionary events of 1917 is given.
