Three hundred years ago, a reform occurred, which laid the foundation for the synodal era - a very important but not sufficiently studied period of the history of the Russian Church. The initiator of the reform, Emperor Peter the Great, took the form of a Protestant collegium as a model for the external organization of the church administration. However, the project failed, because, as St. Filaret of Moskovsky wrote, although Peter seduced the Leibniz about collegiums, established by the Emperor The Spiritual College, Providence of God and the church spirit turned to the Holy Synod. It was this discrepancy between form and life that largely determined the complexity and ambiguity of the synodal era as a whole. Without claiming the coverage of the whole variety of problems associated with it, the reports that came at the Scientific Conference "Church and Power: on the 300th anniversary of the institution of the Holy Synod in the Russian Church", are focused on two of them - the issue of power in the Church and the relations of the Church with the authorities , - expanding the field of consideration on the previous and subsequent synodal era periods.
