Sergei Simakov was born back in 1949, graduated from the famous Moscow Architectural Institute, but became not an architect, but an artist. A sharp turn in his life came in 1983, when he, together with his wife Elena, decided to buy a house in the village of Zagainovo near Uglich. It was here, in the dense forest, that they discovered the church of Mikhail Archangel. Here for the first time they touched Orthodoxy and realized that they would forever remain in these places, devoting their lives to God and this temple.
Then there were twenty oil paintings written by Sergey Simakov. These paintings compiled a grandiose project "under the Blessed cover", with which the artist traveled throughout Russia, collecting funds to restore the temple of Mikhail Archangel, "what"s in Bor". In 1991, the Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov Lord Plato ordained Sergei Simakov to the priests, and in 2004 - Father Sergius was elevated to the rank of Archpriest. A year later, after the death of his wife, he accepted the monastic tonsure with the name Rafail.
... At 42, the famous artist became a priest. He moved from the capital to the Uglich village of Zagainovo, where he conducts services in the church of Mikhail Archangel. Now this is his main work of life.
The name of this artist is widely known, primarily among religious intelligentsia. Once, while still an architect, he looked into the dilapidated temple in the village of Zagainovo near Uglich and stayed there. The indigenous Muscovite is going to spend the rest of his life in the village. There he already has a small parish in the restored church of Mikhail Archangel.
Since childhood, Sergey Simakov began to try to write with oil paints. Parents even had to take off his colors so that he would not spoil his vision, drawing at night. After graduation, he entered the Moscow Architectural Institute. Over six years of study, student Markhi wrote more than 150 paintings. At this time, the artist tried to find his way to display the world, trying to get around the canons of fine art.
In painting, Sergey Simakov began as an avant -garde. In his works of the 70-80s, avant-garde intonations, Slavic exotic and symbolic "troubles" are clearly traced. Later work begins to be filled with Christian meaning, but he reaches the heights of the creative and spiritual artist in his last works. In the people"s exposition, these are the work of the 90s. Now his paintings have become iconographic, while remain painting, moreover, the hand of the architect is visible on each canvas.
The usual place of residence of the paintings is the Yaroslavl Regional Historical Museum. Once at home, in Yaroslavl, one of the paintings was in my breath. In Lyudinov, this wonderful canvas is also exhibited among others.
Art historians studying the icon -painting work of Sergius Simakov note that along with his own artistic findings, the artist’s work has the continuity of icon painting traditions: "" in the work of modern Russian icon painters, such as Father Sergius (in the world - Sergey Simakov) , it should be noted color schemes that give the originality to its icons, but at the same time a number of general, related artistic solutions with icons of the XIV-XV centuries are found.
Father Sergius has been a clergyman for about 10 years. He says that the Orthodox faith opened other cognitive horizons before him, and the painting, as the possibility of self -realization, no longer satisfies his spiritual needs.
Father Sergius responds to his work as follows:
- I have tried everything. What could have been. And, probably making a choice, I do not regret it. I got what I have now, that is, the grace of God. That is, in its complete artistic volume.
In the past, he is a well -known participant in Moscow informal exhibitions at Malaya Georgian. Last year, a personal exhibition, which opened in Yaroslavl, Sergei Simakov said goodbye to the departed period of his worldly life. The artist directed all the financial resources from last year’s exhibition to restore Orthodox shrines.
In April of this year, the artist released a photo album with reproductions of his paintings.
Sergey Simakov says that a photo album with reproductions of his paintings is a visual story how he overcame his hard path to God. In the photo album, his long -standing secular works. Over the years that he wrote with oil, more than 500 works have been created. Many of them were exhibited at the Moscow Vernissage of a small Georgian. He became a fashionable artist of the capital. Alla Pugacheva and Dr. Lange, the owner of a large private art gallery in Germany, were customers of his works and buyers. He began to write icons for temples. Miracles even took place with his works.
Director of the Yaroslavl Art Museum, Nadezhda Petrova, said that when Sergey Simakov was exhibited at their museum, one of the oil paintings dedicated to the Solovetsky monastery began to thessist. Experts were appreciated by the myrrh -bearing picture and said that it was a resin. Then she disappeared. Unfortunately, this work was not included in the photo album.
Simakov’s painting was not accepted by employees of the Soviet Ministry of Culture. However, as Father Sergius joked, they are unknown where, and work has still been preserved.
About Sergius Simakov V. Zolotukha and L. Ulanova shot the film "Priests", in which the authors show the artist’s current life as the path of ascetic at the end of the twentieth century
