The monograph by Metropolitan Isidore (Tupikina) “Bishop of Smolensk and Dorogobuzhsky John (Sokolov): Life and Labor” is dedicated to one of his predecessors at the Smolensk Department-Bishop John (Sokolov, 1818-1869) It examines in detail the life path of Vladyka John, his struggle for ideals, ministry of the Church and the Fatherland, including as the rector of the St. Petersburg and Kazan Theological Academies, as well as the scientific-theological and preaching heritage.
“The personality of the Grace of John and his labors are outstanding and bright even against the background of his great contemporaries, such as saints Filaret of Moscow, Innocent Kherson, Metropolitan Makarii (Bulgakov),” the preface of the publication says.
The monograph was based on the dissertation for the degree of candidate of theology, protected by the author at the Department of Church History of the MD in 2018. The proposed work presents documents from the archives of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Kazan, many of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time
