The Holy Assumption Monastery is located in the Mariam-Dere tract (Maria Gorge) near the city of Bakhchisaray. It is consecrated in honor of the event of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are two versions about its occurrence. According to the first, the monastery was founded by Greek icon-readers who arrived in Crimea in the VIII-IX centuries from Byzantium. According to the second - the base of the monastery dates back to the 15th century.
The main monastery shrine - the icon of the Virgin refers to images like Odigitrius - "guide . In the monastery, the icon is called panagia (all -up) At the end of the XVIII century, he was transferred by Crimean Greeks to the city of Mariupol. Now in the monastery there is a list from the icon.
A monastic life resumed with the institution of the Assumption cave monastery by 1850. By the beginning of the 20th century, five churches, fraternal corps, the rector’s house, a hotel for pilgrims were operating on the territory of the monastery, fountains and a fruit garden were arranged. More than 60 monks and novices lived in the monastery. The monastery included a courtyard in Simferopol and Kinovy of St. Anastasia in the Kachi River Valley.
In 1921, the monastery was closed, in 1923 a decision was made to eliminate all its temples. In 1993, the Assumption Monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church. The new stage of his revival and restoration began.
Currently, by the number of inhabitants, the monastery is the largest in the Crimea. Since 2015, the complex of the Assumption Cave Monastery has been an object of cultural heritage of federal significance.
