The theme of the afterlife is one of the leitmotifs of medieval iconography and medieval culture as a whole. However, this visual heritage is still not only poorly studied, but also little accessible to the reader. The Old Russian Book miniature is not often published, and when publishing icons and frescoes, demonological and infernal images rarely deserve a special commentary.
"Anatomy of Hell" is the first visual "guide" according to the main plots of ancient Russian demonology and iconography of the underworld. The authors show how the icon painters of medieval Russia and the Old Believer masters of the XVIII - early XX centuries. They also represented the demons how they demonized sinners, how they portrayed the devilish temptations and ghostly illusions, how they visualized the invisible: the outcome of the soul from the body, the dispute between the angels and demons for the soul of the deceased, its wanderings in ornamental and a variety of alienated agents.
The album included about 300 images, most of which were not previously published.
