The akathist is dedicated to the holy Edessan martyrs who lived in Mesopotamia at the end of the III - the first quarter of the 4th century. All of them suffered during the persecution of Christians. If Samon and Guri were persecuted under the Roman emperor Diocletian, then the deacon Aviv is already under the Emperor of Licinia. According to Christian legend, Samon and Guria were beheaded, and Aviv was burned at the stake. The bodies of the martyrs were buried in one tomb. After the first crusade (1099), Aviv"s relics, along with the remains of other martyrs, were transported to Italy and buried in the Cathedral of Pisa
