Vladimir Sharov (1952–2018) was a writer and historian, the author of cult novels such as "Before and During," "The Resurrection of Lazarus," "Be Like Children," "Old Maid," "Return to Egypt," and "The Kingdom of Agamemnon." He was a laureate of the Russian Booker Prize and the Big Book Prize. In "Rehearsals," as always under Sharov's pen, Russian history, merging with biblical plots, takes on completely fantastical features: 17th-century Moscow becomes the Promised Land, in New Jerusalem, Patriarch Nikon and a captured French director rehearse the Second Coming, and people assigned roles replay events from the Gospel in anticipation of Christ, passing roles from generation to generation until the mid-20th century... 'Vladimir Sharov was the main Russian writer. The main in every sense, and the most Russian - in terms of his relationship with the language, powerful historical thinking, and the infallible sense of the disappearance of truth and the revelation of truth. Each of his novels was an event for me. Today, I vividly remember how my classmates and I, in the frost of Epiphany in 1999, went to New Jerusalem, stopped on a snow-covered hill, and read "Rehearsals" aloud, looking at the monastery. It was a pilgrimage of readers to a place that Patriarch Nikon did not make holy, but Sharov made a place of wonder... This ecstatic and desolate feeling of the presence of a miracle was the backdrop for reading every Sharov book for me personally. He taught - very gently, always smiling slyly under his beard - that miracles exist, but as soon as we, in the Russian way, start building huts on miracles, it turns into something else. That ancient history never disappears but surrounds us like a grove. That all times are one eternity, and in its night sky, the quiet snow of the Second World Flood slowly swirls, and in the ark, there is warmth.' - Alexander Gavrilov
