This work continues my series of works on the Russian Imperial Army and is fully dedicated to conscription, i.e. the period from the beginning of the 19th century until its replacement by universal military service in 1874. This book, like all the previous ones, is structured as a collection of short essays that may seem unrelated at first glance - like a set of interesting stories and facts from the life of a Russian soldier. However, it's not quite like that. In a simple and accessible form, I try to talk about the peculiarities of the non-combat life of lower-ranking officers of that time in order to create a comprehensive perception. Each issue has its own separate story.
Why was this narrative form chosen? Firstly, the book doesn't have to be read from the beginning. You can open it to any page, for example, in the middle, and read any chapter without losing anything. You don't have to focus on any important section that you think you missed. The material is arranged chronologically - year follows year. So, if you want to learn about the Crimean War, you can go to the middle of the book, and if you're interested in the 1860s, you can go to the end.
Secondly, the essays reveal the methodology of searching for information - where and what specifically to look for in the archives, and in which ones. It always indicates who wrote the petition, report, or circular, and to whom it was addressed. As a result, you will find references to the funds where the necessary documents are located. It's much more convenient this way.
And finally, thirdly. In my materials, there is always room for reflection, feedback, and I invite the reader to think along with me.
