About the artists of Russian emigration, which were after the October Revolution in France, quite a few studies have recently been written. These are both monographs of a general nature and books devoted to individual outstanding personalities. Their life and creativity are exciting material, plunging into which, mentally transferred to Paris of the last century and experience all the vicissitudes of the life of Russian artistic emigration. Meanwhile, the participation of famous Russian masters of painting and graphics in French book publishing is still poorly studied. As a rule, this topic remains on the periphery of research works and is affected only in passing (unlike, say, from the exhibition or theatrical activity of the same artists) It was she who attracted attention.
The task of this album is to demonstrate the whole variety of book illustrations created by the masters of the Russian art school for books that were published in France in the first half of the 20th century. First of all, we are talking, of course, about the 1920-1930s, when this activity was of the most intense character. A brief overview of the circumstances of the emigration and the life of Russian artists in Paris is given as a necessary background for the story of their work with French publishers. As it was accepted in those years, the nationalities of our heroes are not given much importance, for all of them were Russian emigrants for the French, everyone came from Russia and were identified as one. At the same time, in the initial historical tour, only the heroes of this book are consciously mentioned in order to focus the reader"s attention precisely on them
