The fable "Rabbits and Pythons," like most of Iskander's masterpieces from the "Soviet" period, was written "in secret," first published abroad, and only in 1986 did it appear before Russian readers, causing a scandal comparable only to the posthumous publications of Saltykov-Shchedrin's satirical tales. What is the basis of the power of the mighty pythons over the naive, simple-minded rabbits? Fear - a blinding, irrational, paralyzing fear. What is the basis of the idea of a fiercely bold rabbit who dared to challenge this bloodthirsty power? It is based on a simple denial of fear - after all, what can scare those who have nothing to lose in principle? But why are the rabbits even more dissatisfied with such a revolutionary idea than their creeping owners and executioners? Perhaps because they themselves, accustomed to living in a "small but charming injustice" of theft and bribery, fear a change in power much more than the possibility of being eaten.
