Alexei Mikhailovich Tishaisky (1629-1676) was the second Russian tsar from the Romanov dynasty, the son of Mikhail Fedorovich and his second wife Evdokia. A historical novel by the well-known Russian writer Vladislav Bakhrevsky is dedicated to the first period of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich's reign. The novel unfolds a broad and colorful picture of Russian life: the hidden life and intrigues of the royal court, the everyday life of Moscow's outskirts, the first decisive steps of Hegumen Nikon and Priest Avvakum in the field of Orthodox reform, the war for Little Russia, and the "Morozovschina" with its Salt Riot. Finally, the author's original version of the chain of events that led the country to the uprising of Stepan Razin and the religious schism is presented.
