"The Quadroon" is partially based on the author's personal experience. At the age of twenty-one, Reid left England and moved to New Orleans. Following a similar path, albeit a couple of decades later, is the hero of the book, a young British man named Edward. In Louisiana, the young man falls in love with the beautiful quadroon Aurora. Despite her good education and aristocratic manners, Aurora remains a slave. However, her mistress, the young Eugenie Bezanson, is almost bankrupt, and soon the girl's property - her house, plantation, and slaves - will be sold at auction. Trying to raise money to ransom his beloved, Edward gets involved in one adventure after another...
