Georgy Davydovich Venus (1898-1939) was born in St. Petersburg in a family of a descendant of the Germans, who were invited to Russia as Peter the Great. In the First World War, George Venus entered the rank of ensign in 1915. He was twice wounded and awarded the St. George Cross. The horror of the revolution forced George Venus, like many, to escape south and join the ranks of the Volunteer Army. Warrant Officer Venus fell into the Drozdovsky Volunteer Officer Regiment, famous for his courage on the battlefields of the Don and Crimea. In 1926, already in exile, George Venus wrote this novel according to the memories of those events
